Hi Doc, given that you're converting, I'm interested to know what you thought of the denominational differences in the story. The Child and the girls' attitude to the Church of God boys is one of disdain, as the simple evangelical folk tunes clash with the Latin majesty of the Tantum Ergo. The differences between American Evangelicalism and Catholicism seem very stark at this moment. Catholic tradition seems so alien to the boys; their dismissal of it as "Jewish" is interesting: Catholicism certainly roots itself, quite rightly, in Judaism in a way that no other Christian denomination do. I like how Flannery both shows the Child's gratitude for her Catholicism (I often think Protestantism exists to help remind Catholics of the pillars of their own faith), but also how her distinctly unsaintly disdain for the "dumb" Evangelical religion (the C of G boys, the Baptist preacher).
