I found the im age of the 'rose window' fascinating - particularly as the modernist model was Jeremy Bentham's panopticon...

Wonderful Lecture! I really love the detail and clarification Fr. Barron gives to all his talks, especially ones as complex as this one.

The modern idea of liberty is not the same as that of the American founding. The American revolution was based more upon the ancient idea of natural law, descending from Aristotle, Cicero, and the Roman Jurists through down to Locke, Pufendurf, and Grotius, than liberty as license.

That's naive Jeff: America is grounded in the British Enlightenment notion of liberty, a decidedly Whig concept, in which, as Locke said, each man is Orthodox in his own breast. American freedom -- via Madison 51 and 10 in the Federalist Papers -- is a clear and conscious attempt to NOT lead man toward virtue and therefore be free, but rather to pursue whatever it is one wishes to pursue, with the caveat that it does not hurt one's neighbor. In short, America protects and defends the privatization of freedom, and throws out the universal (Natural) concept of freedom that necessarily comes to a person ONLY when when conforms to what one objectively is. Locke, Machiavelli and Bacon are the true Fathers of America.
