Sermon 13 : Scapegoating : 5th Sunday of Lent

The New Testament frequently explores the scapegoating violence of the mob, nowhere more insightfully than in the story of the woman caught in adultery. Jesus stops the momentum of the violent crowd and forces them to see their own sin.

Paula
Thank you on behalf of all sinners who cried out for mercy to those who stood equal to them. I only add to this, if one has been stoned/condemned, that is the most important time to remember to follow the voice of Jesus, to love one another as he has loved us. It is the only key to surviving a stoning, to bleed love, to bleed it out no matter the pain, to bleed until the well runs clear. If you want to walk away from a stoning and live you have to love, love through all the anguish, all the pain, all of it. A heart that loves cannot die no matter what is thrown at it, so if attacked, rejected, hated, despised, love, Be Love, one can be love, even if one is not loved by any other person because God is love. Examine everything in scripture of how and what Jesus did, how he expressed love, what did he do when he was scapegoated, despised, rejected, what did he do when he rose again, who did he seek out, what did he say? Look at all that instead of the stones that are flying and learn and don't let anything stop you from loving. Love at all costs, love in the face of it all, it is the only thing that works. Anything else, any other response, is like placing a stone over our own heart. It is the stone we place in front of our own heart that will kill us, not the stones thrown at us. Loving, letting light shine through, that is our strength and we cannot allow anything to stop it, our sins, others sins, nothing. Love will light the path, love is what will enable us to forgive, love is what will ensure we are still useful in the Kingdom, love will give us the sense to know what to do, because God is love.
