How do we know what's going on? How do we read the signs of the times? We could do so politically, sociologically, culturally, or economically. But the Bible insists that the world should be read theologically. What precisely is God doing and why? This sermon is about how to do this.

Who are the messengers of God today. That is such a challenging question and one which the world makes us feel crazy for even asking. Personally, i perceive someone like Glenn Beck who is actively fighting for the Church though he's no longer a Catholic. I would love to know if anyone agrees with me and which other messengers folks have noticed. God Bless.

Thank you Fr.Barron.Who are messengers of God today? Well, I think EVERYBODY could be a messenger of God IF EVERYBODY have had a heart to do the WILL of GOD, and share it to all with LOVE as you said, with Faith with Love to GOD above all, all can be messengers, but without love and without faith no one could be a messenger...

I also agree with Loren T. God Bless You in your work, Fr. Barron! I am so happy that I found out about Word on Fire, the Catholicism book, and the video series. We are watching the videos during Lent at our parish and it has affected those watching it very deeply and has awakened the spirit within us all!

I have to say, there may be another answer. I think Loren is correct, but I also think that some of the political leaders of our day are messengers. They tell of the evil that is in man's heart, and therefore, the danger that lies among us when we turn away from God. If that is true, God is SHOUTING at us to wake up!!
I love all of your talks Fr. Barron. Keep up the brilliant work.,,,and God bless you!

Well said Nenette. I agree with you. At the end of Mass, our Father tells the congregation to go out and spread the word of God. In that light, We are all ambassadors of the Word of God. And as Nenette mentioned in so many words, to be a good Ambassador, you need to live the Word. I am a Catechist who is not one of the Elect to be baptized during Easter Vigil. This is an amazing journey for me, and I look forward to participating in all the sacraments.

It is my humble opinion (from reading the comments) that we may be missing Fr. Barron's point just a tad.
Fr. B's point is that we (those in the Catholic Church) need to be reading the "signs of the times". We need the cleansing. We need the introspection. We need the "course correction". So are there messengers out there (within and without) that are pointing out precisely where the Church may be not doing all that God wants us to do? Are we heeding those signs?
For example, I do believe that the HHS Mandate is an "opportunity". It has already resulted in the Bishops finding their voices again. It is my prayer that this become a trend. At the root of this issue is the battle we implicitly gave up on when "Humanae Vitae" first came out.
The cleansing is already underway. It would behoove us as Catholics, as Fr. B. rightly points out, to pay keen attention to the "signs" and return ever so strongly to the foundations of our faith.
Support the Bishops. Here are some ways that you can.

I must disagree with Byron wholeheartedly. Beck is a notorious conspiracy theorist and demagogue. If people see conspiracy theorists as champions of Mother Church, then Mother Church seems doomed in Eruope, Oceania, and the Americas. I actually see Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI as messengers, as they have been seriously working towards renewing the Church.

Hi, Byron. I will comment on your remarks since you are at the top of the list. We are in a sense God's messengers, but, I think, only to the extent we are in harmony with the Church, which is directed and governed by the Holy Spirit. The Church has been teaching us all along, and we need to read and study the documents of the Church, from the Apostles, the early Church, the Councils and all the way to the present time. It's easy to go astray, lose our way, as much of the world has done today. The Holy Spirit will not leave us orphans.

I have been turned on to my faith for quite some time. I look around and see leaders within their church community doing only what they have to do but not yet set on fire. I am excited now knowing while I have tried to set the fire I now see a greater one than I is doing so. I am so excited to watch and see more people getting the message. Thank for speaking out at a time when people need to hear HIS voice. Thank you for becoming His mouth piece. I have felt like Richard Pryor in the Movie Holy Moses. I truly am thrilled that Moses has arrived and hears God. AMen

1 Corinthians 2:10-13
"Yet God has revealed this wisdom to us through the Spirit. The Spirit scrutinizes all matters, even the deep things of God. Who, for example knows man's innermost self, but the man's own spirit within him? Similarily, no one know what lies at the depths of God, but the Spirit of God. The Spirit we have recieved is not the world's spirit, but God's Spirit, helping us to recognize the gifts He has given us. We speak of these in words not of human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, thus interpreting spiritual things in Spiritual terms."
It would be so easy to become frenetic with this person or that, this worldly issue or that, and implode with the hysteria of bombardment, thrown at us through technilogical medias. Or, explode and become judges, rather than leaving God tend that task. If we are to begin to understand the Signs, we need The Holy Spirit's direction, because we have not been left alone. We have the beacon of God in the Trinity, and the fruits and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit to light our hearts on fire; to inspire and instruct. God Speed!

Allow me a second comment.
If The Church, with covering it's face from God, by witholding the abuses of our priests, bishops, cardinals, has possibly broken OUR COVENANT with God, then we must implore Mary, The Saints, The Martyrs, God's Angel's and God's Dominians, to spare us from further deciet amongst eachother; NOW is the time to implore God's Mercy, through our Redeemer. If Obama's mandate has provided us with an issue of life to rise to, then let us rise, not with arrogance, but with constant praise to The One God who has provided us with a chance to leave the desert of our sin, and enter into the HOPE of HIS Redemptive Power. Let us become steadfast, with the humility of the people of Christ; not a people trying to pretend we are pure and in want of applause. God Speed!

Biblically, the message has been and will remain the same. God sends his messengers and prophets to ammend our course and lead us to being one with Him.
The free will that God gives us, makes it difficult to make the correct choices due to our human weaknesses. Free will gives us the choice to choose God's way, striving to be perfect as He is perfect. To strive to be good and perfect is hard work, and takes discipline. However our relationship with God is more important than anything else, so why should it be easy, right?
As my last Pastor said "It's suppose to hurt(it didn't matter what he was talking about...) For about 12 years and what seemed like a very, very long time, those words and his behaviors seemed cruel. Those words lacked empathy and regard. I'm beginning to understand it, but it's important to match the spiritual muaturity of the receiver, too.
Christ gave His life, and we in turn have to sacrifice until it hurts, too. But it's one thing to understand, and it's another thing to try to live out.
Prophets and messengers are like coaches. It is their responsibility to direct us back to God, and we should listen....even when it is uncomfortable.

We really are missing the signs. Fr. Barron’s words are solid, there is truth in them and I think we’d all agree that he is one of those messengers pointing.
He is pointing the way. It doesn’t stop there.
The recent example given to what has happened to Sundays is so in line with this, it is basic to see and to understand in and for our own time. When we don’t say or do anything, we cooperate.
I am so glad to hear this talk of the perspective of the people of ancient Israel. There is such a significant difference to how they operated then compared to how we operate now. We seem so far removed from that perspective. Do we truly believe the Bible is the WORD of GOD and the WORD is the truth? Without discernment and wisdom, how can any of us respond to God’s Will.
We do need and rely on our church leaders and God’s messengers to help by pointing the way. Sometimes I think we’re so focused on how to control what we’re doing that the church isn’t allowing herself to be the church.
The anonymous fool is so right on - we so badly need to return to the roots of our faith.

Comment in response to Byron:
Yes!!!! I believe Glenn Beck is a messenger and in some way some sort of "prophet", if you will. I think God is leading him back to the Catholic Church. Did you hear his recent remarks about Pope Benedict and that Beck thinks that the Pope knows whats going on in the world in terms of the secular world coming down on the church and the Pope is arming himself with Cardinals that will protect the Church.
Speaking of the Pope, he is a messenger of today as was Blessed JPII.

All of the comments are so faith-fortifying and Holy-Spirit directed. I love them. You all made me proud to be a Catholic and to call you my brothers and sisters in Christ. I particularly like some of the comments a lot, but will keep those to myself and meditate them like Mary did. As I re-listened to Fr. Barron's sermon again tonight and tried to answer them after he posed the questions orally, the message at Fatima kept re-echoing in my head. Maybe there's a reason why God chose Russia as a country to be consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. She wanted the Pope and all Bishops in the universal church to consecrate Russia to Her Heart, otherwise, Russia will spread its errors. Like in the second reading of 4th Week of Lent, God had used a foreigner, namely King Cyrus of Persia to bring His people back to His Heart. Could God be using a former dictatorial nation, through the beacon Mary, His own Mother, to bring His people back to His Heart? Just a thought.
As always, Fr. Barron, thank you for shepherding us through your Holy-Spirit-led sermons, and extremely glad that you've made it back safe and sound from down and under. I sure miss that place myself ;-)

Fr. Barron - thank you for exhorting Catholics and others to look at the world from the perspective of heaven. There is much in the Church especially in the West (North America and Europe) which needs a chastisement to wake up to God's will and desires for the Church and for the world. There are many messenger: Pope Benedict XVI as was Blessed Pope John Paul II - true prophets, teachers like Mother Angelica - all are called to be saints, Dr. Tom Curran and yourself - St. Thomas Aquinas scholars - sharing his profound wisdom, Fr. Ranerio Cantalamessa as preacher and teacher, Ralph Martin spiritually with 'Fulfillment of all Desire', the Institute of Catholic Culture and evangelistic groups like FOCUS, Renewal Minitries, NET etc. Within the Nelson Diocese there are initiatives to adult formation - Summer Institute, parish bases adult catechesis. God's ways are not our ways and His plans cannot even be imagined, yet each one of us is an integral componet of His plan, are we living up to the plan and purpose He has for us? My prayer is that I may trust His purpose and plan is being accomplished: in the Church, in the World, in all of Humanity, in my family and most of all in me. Thank you for blessing the world with God's purpose to challenge His beloved and give them opportunities to obey His call.
Blessings
Maria

''The deepest and truest reading is the theological, which seeks after the divine causality and purpose, working under and through all these others." Boy, Fr. Barron, these words of yours center us at the heart of this message both historically and presently. Now, why don't we, as a nation, (or nations), listen?

Going by the first reading applied to our day, I would say He is indeed cleansing the Church. But it won't be cleansed by the non-repentant, comfortable, status-quo we find today at the various helms of most of church activities. It is there, as well as in the first reading, that we find "the priests and the people added infidelity to infidelity, practicing all the abominations of the nations and polluting the LORD'S temple."
Look to those like Obama to try take advantage of this infidelity and use it for political gain. And those who will begin to "test" the unfaithful status quo in the church. And look to those who stand in contradiction to those who love the comforts and praises of this world, those who prefer the truth and God's mercy and who do not abuse that truth. Father B is right. You may have to really squint.
Those who feel the need to change or update the doctrines of the church are the same who have "polluted" Her. They do not speak out against contraception, they do not speak out against sexual perversions nor infidelity, they do not speak out against materialism and the love of money and pride of position. In short, they have abandoned the faith and the teaching of the Church that we must resist always the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil. Talk like that in todays church makes you a fanatic!
So......who do you know who is a Catholic Christian fanatic? Faithful to the 2000 years of Wisdom and Truth found in His Holy Catholic Church. Chances are you won't find that person in a position of authority inside or outside of the church. The status quo despises them. These are the ones whom God often uses to keep the faith alive, the ones whom the status quo "mocked, the messengers of God" and "despised his warnings, and scoffed at his prophets."
After seventy years of suffering, maybe we'll start to love God more than we love the world and all those desires. Well, perhaps our seventy years are about to begin.

Care for a few statistics?
Number of children killed since Roe. v. Wade - 50 Million and counting. (http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/fb_induced_abortion.html)
Percentage of marriages and co-habitations resulting in divorce? Worse than you think. See http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/series/sr_23/sr23_028.pdf
Do you consider yourself to be pro-life? Then get back to the roots of our faith. Condemn contraception in all its forms.
Do you want civilized society to exit the moral morass we find ourselves in? Then get back to the roots of our faith. Condemn contraception in all its forms.
Do you wish that women were no longer objectified, that marriages are strong, that divorce is non-existent, that you had a closer, more intimate relationship with your spouse? Then condemn contraception now. Return to the roots of our faith.
Do you wonder why you and your children find the world to be a stranger place each passing day? That what you teach your children at home seems to be at odds with what they learn outside? Do you wish that could change? Condemn contraception now. Return to the roots of our faith.

Thankyou for this in depth sermon. You asked who is God raising up to build up to Church again? I think the signs of the times are obvious and the world , sad to say, is getting worse and worse. There are many people, too many people who do not beleive in God anymore. There are wars and rumors of wars and terrible things going on in the world at a rate unprecedented. Evil has been called good (abortion, samesex marriage, euthanizia) and good; evil (Pro life, charity work, freedom of conscience) This ofcourse is predicted before the Second Coming of Jesus Chris; this time as the Just Judge. But Our God is our Heavenly Father and He loves us; and before judgement He will send warnings and messages of Mercy to everyone on the planet - regardless of their faith. God is ever merciful and knows the struggle man has with the temptations, evil and attacks of satan. To read the messages of Mercy and calling back of all Christians to Jesus, go to www.warningsecondcoming.com Our Lord is sending messages of hope and reconcilation through devoted believers. God is raising up His faithful to prepare His Children for Jesus Second Coming. Its just what a Good Father would do because He loves us so much. GOd bless. Praise the Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God.

Moreso, I believe the world is so noisy today. Too many distractions tend to take our focus away from God.
I believe God is literally shouting at us through and over the noise.
We must choose to remove ourselves even if it is just one minute a day to silence the noise so as to hear what He wants us know.

I agree wholeheartedly with Anonymous. I have read that 25% of Catholics attend Mass. How many Catholic women practice contraception? The thing is this. How many Catholics actually practice their faith or follow its' teachings? We have become a secularized nation and many Catholics are falling into its' trap just as the Israelites of old fell into pagan ways. Kind of a scary thought. Messengers of the Faith, such as the Pope,Bishops, and Priests, are trying to bring the apostolic teachings to the faithful, but how many are listening and how many actually hear? And within the Body of Christ itself how many are actually going out into the world, and by their words and deeds, evangelizing by their example. The HHS mandate is a major threat to our religious liberties and we all need to pull together with our Bishops and fight this unfair and antiamerican ruling. Many Catholics, once again, are standing on the other side of the fence, and not with their church. We also have an Islamic idealogy knocking on our back door which is totally at odds with the christian faith and way of living. God is being taken out of the public sphere and shoved aside for secular lifestyles and if you take God out something has to come in and fill the vacuum. I cannot believe that God is satisfied with what is going on in our country and the world today. And "Thank You" Father Barron for your Catholicism series which we have been studying in our parish. It truly has opened my eyes and offered me a new and refreshing way of approaching my Faith!
