Today we remember Jesus' death on the cross, a brutal exit that triggered a most heralded return. The grim circumstances of this day, however, serve as a reminder of all he did for us, and all he continues to do for us, through his sacrifice. The following is a reading from the Letter to the Hebrews accompanied by the center panel of the Isenheim Altarpiece by Matthias Grunewald.

On this Tuesday of Holy Week, Father Steve Grunow offers a poignant and compelling reflection on the tragic figure of Judas Iscariot...and our own identification with his great mistake.

If there is one truly tragic figure in the New Testament it is Judas Iscariot.

He is the one that Christ himself observes that "it might have been better if he had never been born."  The horror of Christ's words are unrelenting in their terror.  We might be inclined, given Christ's words and out of indignation at Judas' role in the cruel death of Christ, to make Judas less a man and more of a devil.  But, that would be wrong.  The tragedy of Judas is not that he was evil, but that he was like us— and like us in ways that we might never be willing to admit.

What makes Judas stand out then?...

Today, the Monday of Holy Week, Father Steve Grunow shares his sermon about Isaiah, Christ, and the many complexities to a story that ultimately serve to simplify, redeem and illuminate.

Our first reading for today is an excerpt from the Old Testament Book of the Prophet Isaiah. In this text, the prophet reveals a mysterious figure, which he names as the servant of the Lord. The servant of the Lord has been chosen by the God of Israel for a particular mission.

The mission of this servant is the restoration of Israel. The prophet Isaiah speaks the word of the Lord from the midst of distressing and painful circumstances. The once-mighty Kingdom of David has fallen into ruin and its past glory has retreated into memory. The fall of David's Kingdom has left Israel vulnerable to the powers of the world that have seized their lands, destroyed their cities, desecrated their holy places and reduced Israel to the status of a slave. It is to this Israel, seemingly forsaken, that the servant of the Lord will come.

The Church understands Isaiah's vision of the servant of the Lord as a foreshadowing of Christ.

As one reads further in the Book of the Prophet Isaiah one discerns that the servant of the Lord will effect the restoration of David's Kingdom through his suffering and through his willingness to accept this suffering as a mission that comes from God, he will offer Israel forgiveness and hope.

That the servant of the Lord would suffer confounded many in Israel and still seems strange to us today. Humanity has tendency to read service to the Lord as by necessity resulting in material blessings. In this construel of Biblical revelation, the commitment to serve the Lord should result in deliverance from the hard facts of life and result in a life that is by all measure successful...

Today, Word On Fire Production Manager, Jack Thornton, reflects on his experiences in Rome during the recent conclave.

After 10 days of walking the streets of Rome, eagerly waiting in St. Peter’s Square for the election of the new pontiff, bumbling my way through Italian restaurant orders, experiencing the transformation of the crowd in the Square from a cold, peaceful herd of pilgrims before the white smoke appeared into a massive, singing, cheering, flag-waving stampede the second the potassium chlorate, lactose and chloroform resin compound drifted into the wet sky; filming, editing and uploading several video updates, chatting with exotic travelers from all over the world (locales such as Greece, Hungary and Cleveland); finding my way to 12:15 p.m. Mass in St. Peter’s blocked by 150,000 faithful packed in the Square for Pope Francis’ first Angelus; wishing my Italian was better so I could understand the multiple bursts of laughter at every event Pope Francis spoke at; getting beautifully lost every single time I wandered off the main roads; contracting some illness or other and drying out my soaking wet shoes not once, not twice, but three times; happening upon a church with some original Caravaggios and pretending I wasn’t eating gelato while I examined “The Calling of St. Matthew”; hearing a pin drop when the newly elected pontiff asked for the blessing of the faithful; eavesdropping on two American reporters marveling at the warm reception Pope Francis received at his audience with the media (“Obama
never gets standing ovations”); wandering into some lovely, extravagant old churches chock full of centuries old art and decoration;confessing my myriad sins to an Irish priest; a one-and-a-half hour-ish flight from Rome to Munich and an eyebrow-raising voyage through the vigorous security measures in the German airport (full-body pat downs for all!); sitting squished between two Europeans on the final flight from Munich to Chicago; buckets of hot tea, lots of pizza, lots of pasta, and one very long run on sentence, my Roman adventure is finally over...
