Thank you for this very fine essay on this important encyclical. I would only add one point. "According to this mode, one gives, not because he is contractually obligated or legally compelled to give, but simply because it is good so to do. This is the kind of giving that mimics most fully the divine manner of giving." As true as that is, I think it is perhaps important to recognize that the "Logic of Gratuity" compels us to give not so much because it is good to do so, which it certainly is, but because we have first been given so much. Our giving is thus more like the Son than like the Father. Or more like Mary's. It is not out of our abundance that we give, but out of our poverty.
