Ironically, I just finished reading “Salt of the Earth” last week and found it mesmerizing in the way Seewald’s questions, not given in advance, were answered by the then Cardinal Ratzinger. What a great mind and so structured in his response. The book format was perfect and very easy to read. So I have Seewald and the Popes followup “Light of the World” on my list.

I am especially interested in the Popes response to the sex abuse scandals in this new book. It becomes hard for Catholics to keep invigorated with the faith when new charges keep surfacing. (recent Philadelphia sex abuse Feb 2011) If this activity is going on, it lends one to wonder what priests are engaged in milder scandals, like heterosexual affairs. Ugh, I’ll stop here.

You mentioned Pope Benedict’s statement, “bring to light God’s priority again” and it reminds me about John Haughey S.J. in his “Housing Heavens Fire” where he said, “as a church, we try to understand Christ in his historical life ... and precious little now that he has risen.”
