Perhaps we could file this under the “just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse” category. Following the successful campaign in England to mount placards on buses saying “there is no God; so relax and enjoy your life,” the land that gave us Thomas a Becket, Edward the Confessor, Anselm of Canterbury, Thomas More and John Henry Newman is now producing hundreds of thousands of people who are endeavoring to renounce their Christian identities by de-baptizing themselves.

I consider myself something of a Notre Dame man. I attended the University of Notre Dame my freshman year, just before entering the college seminary. This was 1977-78, the year that the football team, under the coaching of Dan Devine and the quarterbacking of Joe Montana, won the national championship and the basketball team, led by Digger Phelps, made it to the final four.

Barack Obama The Audacity of HopeSomehow during the long campaign season, I never got around to reading Barack Obama’s The Audacity of Hope. In recent weeks, two very bright friends of mine—and not political supporters of the president—rather warmly recommended the book to me.

Just a few days ago, the latest findings of the American Religious Identification Survey were published, and they revealed several interesting trends. One of the most startling is that northern New England—once a bastion of both Protestant and Catholic Christianity—is now the most unchurched section of the country, a distinction formerly held by the Pacific Northwest.
