Thank you,Father Barron, for choosing this passage. I have often thought about this, in reference to seeking some silence in the busyness of life, to be able to hear God speaking to me/us.

Fr. you raise an interesting point on the conscience and how it is purposefully misconstrued by the self-righteous. Psychology has and continues to play a big role in the distortion of the word and proper manner in which responsible people are meant to uncover their weaknesses and faults. The feeling of "Catholic guilt" was a big contributor to the gain made by psychologists and even ordinary people who were not able to look at the depth of their guilt. Psychologists told us to let go of it faulting the faith. For many, it is easier to uphold the person who appears to be sympathetic to your trial and who tells you to stop being ashamed and furthermore, justifying the guilt. Rather, we should be truthful and delve deeper into awareness and understanding of the guilt - aka, sin.

Dear Father Barron,

Thanks for a great column, and for the remarkable work you are doing.

"Conscience" has become a dirty word in American society. It is such a sad thing. If I ask friends to complete the phrase, "Catholic ________" the word they put in the blank is "guilt."

I was away from the church during my teenage years. One thing came back to me over and over during that time...it was the beautiful words, "examination of conscience." I hope we can recover these beautiful words and beliefs--and practices--over time.

God Bless You.
